Ed and Lorraine Warren are back for one last case in one of the creepiest and most suspenseful trailers we’ve seen in a long time. Here’s what we thought about The Conjuring: The Last Rites Trailer.
What is The Conjuring: Last Rites about?
The studio has been tight lipped about the plot of the film. Stating, “Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) take on one last terrifying case involving mysterious entities they must confront.” However, the trailer hints to a haunting in 1986 in Pennsylvania. According to the records of Ed and Lorraine, they investigated the house of the Smurl family which claimed to be occupied by four spirits and a demon.
Reportedly, the demon caused loud noises, bad odors, threw their dog into a wall, shook their mattress, threw their daughter down a flight of stairs and physically and sexually assaulted the family on several occasions. Left with no choice, Jack and Janet Smurl (Elliot Cowan and Rebecca Calder) contact the Warrens for help. As we can see from the trailer, Ed and Lorraine have crossed paths with this demon before. Accounts of their ordeal were published in the book, The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare, and also a televisions movie of the same name.
It’s the ninth installment of The Conjuring Universe which began in 2013 and the fourth The Conjuring film. And is by far the highest-grossing horror franchise, followed by Alien. Currently, you can watch the first eight films on HBO Max.
First Reactions to The Conjuring: Last Rites Trailer
After watching the trailer, I can see they saved the best for last. The trailer has everything we hope to see in a Conjuring trailer. It is suspenseful, creepy and down-right terrifying. The part that really got me was when Lorraine is looking under the bed and sees the impressions of someone on laying in it. She stands up, the sheets are deflating and you see the fingerprints slowly disappear. That’s one of those, “oh, hell no” moments.
It’s exciting to see the Conjuring Universe is going back to their ghosts roots. Although good, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It felt a little out of place. With the lack of ghosts in that film, they seem to more than make up for it in this trailer. In addition, this film and The Devil Made Me Do It are both directed by Michael Chaves. He does a great job of creating terror. However I miss the spooky and eerie feeling of the first 2 films James Wan directed. Since this the last Conjuring film, it would have been nice if Wan directed the last one.

Also, it’s nice to see the Warrens’ daughter, Judy (Mia Tomlinson), play a more prominent role in this film. Even though she was introduced in the first movie, not much is known about her character with the exception of she may have her mother’s gift. Now, she’s running her parents business so I’m hoping there will be more about their relationship.
Overall, between this trailer and the teaser recently released, it looks pretty good. Hopefully, all the scares weren’t cramped in these two trailers. With movies like this, it’s best to tease in the trailers and reveal in the theaters. However, I’m excited to see it when arrives in theaters.
