Retirement communities are meant for, well, retirement. After working the majority of your life, it’s a great place for rest, relaxation and maybe play a few games. But who has time for that when there’s a murder case to solve. A group of unlikely sleuths plan to do just that in the Netflix film, The Thursday Murder Club.

What is The Thursday Murder Club about?

Based on the book of the same name by Richard Osman, the film follows four retirees at a luxurious retirement community. It is the first in a series of books including The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed, The Last Devil to Die and the newest installment The Impossible Fortune, releasing later this year.

Elizabeth Best (Helen Mirren) is an ex-spy, Ron Ritchie (Pierce Brosnan) is ex–union activist, Ibrahim Arif (Ben Kingsley) is an ex-psychiatrist and Joyce Meadowcroft (Celia Imrie) is an ex-nurse. Instead of playing bridge, this group of friends who would rather spend their time solving cold cases. Soon, the four friends find themselves in a real-life murder mystery when an unexplained death occurs close to home. Even though they are suspects themselves, they will do whatever it takes to solve the murder.

According to director Chris Columbus, “it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder.” He goes on to say, “They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are obsessed with studying cold cases. I fell in love thematically with that. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional.”

The Thursday Murder Club arrives both in select theaters and on Netflix on August 28, 2025. The film is not too long with a run-time of 1 hour 58 minutes.

The film has a rating of PG-13 for violent content, bloody images, strong language and some sexual references.
